HARRISBURG – The Senate Education Committee voted today to approve a bill to better protect Pennsylvania students by requiring armed security officers in schools, according to Sen. Dave Argall (R-29), who chairs the committee.
“When I traveled across the state holding roundtable discussion on school safety, I heard countless times from students, parents, educators, and administrators that we need to do more to keep our children safe,” said Argall. “With today’s vote, we’re preventing future tragedies.”
Senate Bill 907, sponsored by Sen. Mike Regan (R-31), would require an armed, trained, and vetted school security officer in every public school building.
The committee also advanced three additional bills, including Senate Bill 700, sponsored by Sen. Michele Brooks (R-50), which would allow highly qualified individuals to more easily obtain certification to teach as instructors at career and technical centers.
House Bill 1507, sponsored by Rep. Jesse Topper (R-78), would provide school districts with additional scheduling flexibility to allow for more individualized education.
House Bill 1258, sponsored by Rep. Stephen Kinsey (D-201), would allow schools to include high school students enrolled in dual credit courses in their average daily membership.
