Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee Approves Military and Veterans Measures

Today, the Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee gave its approval to three measures, one of which supports our military facilities and two that support veterans, according to Committee Chairman Senator Randy Vulakovich (R-Allegheny).

Senate Bill 798 allows the appointment of a one-star or two-star military officer to the Military Community Enhancement Commission.  “Pennsylvania’s military bases contribute a $24 billion to our economy, including 152,000 jobs,” said Vulakovich.  “The Commission helps to ensure that the Commonwealth and its communities are prepared in case of base closure or restructuring initiatives at the federal level.  Most recently, the Commission and the Commonwealth were successful in securing a new squadron of C-17’s at the 911th Airlift Wing, outside of Pittsburgh.  This legislation will ensure that the Commission has access to a greater pool of senior military officers.”

Senate Resolution 5 establishes a Women’s Veterans’ Health Care task force to address the needs of Pennsylvania’s growing female veteran population.  “This task force would review issues facing women veterans, such as PTSD, alcohol and drug abuse and sexual trauma,” said Vulakovich.  “It would also serve as an advocate for all of the Pennsylvania women who have served in uniform as the Commonwealth shapes new health care policies and reviews existing ones.”

House Bill 1231 codifies into law a Veterans Registry within the PA Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and provide veterans with information regarding state benefits, programs, and services.  “Our nearly 900,000 veterans have given much to our state and our nation,” said Vulakovich.  “This registry will aid them in identifying the benefits they earned and services they need.”

Each of the bills are now before the full Senate for consideration.
