McIlhinney Bill Would Expand Awareness of VA Burial Benefits

HARRISBURG – Veterans and their families would have broader access to information regarding VA burial benefits under legislation introduced today by Senator Chuck McIlhinney (R-10).

Senate Bill 616 would require funeral directors and cemetery companies to provide information regarding the availability of burial benefits for veterans. The information would cover a number of benefits available to those who served in the military, including burial allowances, burial in national cemeteries, presidential memorial certificates, military funeral honors, flags to be draped over caskets, and headstones and markers.

The information would be made available whenever a veteran or anyone working on their behalf purchases funeral merchandise or a burial plot.

“I recently spoke with a family member of a veteran who had never heard about all of the burial benefits that are afforded for the brave men and women who served our country. Other local residents have reported hearing false or misleading information about VA benefits from a variety of sources,” McIlhinney said. “We owe tremendous gratitude to our veterans and their families who have sacrificed so much for our nation, and we need to do more to ensure the information they receive is accurate and complete so they can utilize the benefits they rightfully earned.”
