Senator Laughlin Celebrates Bipartisan Enactment of Sunday Hunting Bill

HARRISBURG — Sen. Dan Laughlin (R-49) today celebrated the signing of House Bill 1431 into law by Governor Josh Shapiro, marking a major bipartisan victory that expands Sunday hunting opportunities across Pennsylvania.

Originally introduced by Rep. Mandy Steele (D-Allegheny) as a companion to Laughlin’s Senate Bill 67, the legislation reflects years of advocacy by lawmakers from both sides of the aisle. Since entering the Senate, Senator Laughlin has made Sunday hunting reform one of his top priorities, championing the rights of hunters and working families to enjoy the outdoors on their own schedules.

“With Governor Shapiro’s signature, Pennsylvania hunters now have greater freedom to decide when they hunt,” Laughlin said. “This is a commonsense change that supports working-class families, respects personal choice, and strengthens our state’s outdoor traditions.”

Under the new law, the number of Sundays available for hunting will increase beyond the limited three Sundays allowed under previous legislation. This change is especially important for individuals and families who work or attend school during the week and rely on weekends to enjoy recreational hunting.

Laughlin also credited retired Senator Jim Brewster (D-Allegheny) for helping pave the way for this moment.

“Senator Brewster was a longtime advocate for Sunday hunting, and when he left the Senate, I was proud to pick up the torch,” Laughlin said. “This law is a result of years of bipartisan effort and grassroots support from Pennsylvania’s hunting community.”

The bill passed the General Assembly with bipartisan backing and was signed into law by Governor Shapiro in a ceremonial event this morning.

“This isn’t just about hunting—it’s about fairness,” Laughlin added. “No one should be denied the chance to enjoy our public lands and hunting heritage simply because they work Monday through Saturday. I thank Rep. Steele for her leadership, my colleagues in the Senate for their support, and Governor Shapiro for making this law a reality.”
