HARRISBURG – Sen. Greg Rothman (R-34) has introduced legislation, Senate Bill 1444, that will protect homeowners from outdated licensing and permitting processes that can be barriers to starting or operating a small business.
Many Pennsylvanians support their families by operating small businesses out of their homes. Whether it’s providing instructional support for local students, making craft items or other endeavors, home-based businesses positively impact our economy and serve the needs of the community.
While technological advancements have made home-based businesses more viable than ever, outdated local ordinances have failed to keep pace.
“This legislation eliminates unnecessary red tape by streamlining the processes individuals use to operate a home-based business,” Rothman said. “The bill would ensure home-based businesses are not forced to pay unnecessary fees or obtain cumbersome licenses and permits.”
“Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy,” said National Federation of Independent Businesses State Director Greg Moreland. “Easing onerous barriers for home-based businesses ensures they have the freedom to provide for their families and contribute to our communities.”
The bill would not impact municipalities’ authority to address nuisances, hold bad actors accountable or regulate matters of public health and safety.
“Government should not impede hard working Pennsylvanians,” Rothman said. “This legislation ensures home-based businesses have a chance at prosperity.”
