HARRISBURG – The Senate unanimously passed legislation sponsored by Sen. Chris Gebhard (R-48) to allow Fort Indiantown Gap police officers to be Act 120 certified under the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (MPOETC).
Currently, police officers at Fort Indiantown Gap complete all the same certification requirements but are never assigned numbers by MPOETC. This can prevent them from being able to transfer to another police department without retaking the exam.
“Police officers do an incredibly difficult, stressful and sometimes even deadly job. It’s no wonder that we’re always in need of men and women who are willing to serve our communities in that capacity,” Gebhard said. “My bill would remove a barrier for them, making all of us safer as we would be better protected.”
Senate Bill 327 would give Fort Indiantown Gap police officers the same opportunity already afforded to every other municipal police department, school police department and the Capitol Police.
Gebhard’s bill was approved by the Senate last session as Senate Bill 1228 but did not receive a vote by the House of Representatives.
The bill, which supports the Senate Republican priority of making communities safer, now moves to the House of Representatives for consideration.
