HARRISBURG – Senate Majority Leader Kim Ward (R-Westmoreland) issued the following statement today regarding legislative actions addressing election reform in Pennsylvania:
“Delivering on a promise to the voters of Pennsylvania, the Senate today advanced the Voting Rights Protection Act (HB 1300), a measure that will ensure our election process is secure and fair, which is paramount in maintaining the integrity of our Commonwealth.
“The Voting Rights Protection Act puts the voters of Pennsylvania one step closer to having greater confidence in our election process by safeguarding the vote of each eligible voter in Pennsylvania by creating voter ID requirements and early voting measures that includes signature verification on mail-in ballots.
“While we expect Democrats to support veto measures articulated by Gov. Wolf, we will continue to listen to the people of Pennsylvania who overwhelmingly support voter ID measures by more than 70% as noted in a recent Franklin and Marshall College poll.
“The Senate has also advanced a constitutional amendment measure giving the people of Pennsylvania a direct say in what they want should this matter not be addressed in a bipartisan manner.
“Pennsylvanians deserve a government that works for them, and the Senate looks forward to continuing to do its part to lead this effort and in the best interest of all Pennsylvanians.”
