For Immediate Release
Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-9) said that Governor Tom Corbett has signed Senate Bill 334, legislation which eliminates Philadelphia’s scandal-plagued Traffic Court. The bill goes into effect immediately.
“I thank Governor Corbett for signing this bill and bringing to an end the decades-long and well-documented history of corruption and dysfunction at Traffic Court,” Senator Pileggi said.
Last week, the Senate unanimously approved House amendments to Senate Bill 334 and sent the bill to Governor Corbett.
According to a report issued by the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and subsequent federal indictments, Philadelphia Traffic Court had “two tracks of justice – one for the connected and another for the unwitting general public” and its judges were involved in “frequent and pervasive ‘ticket-fixing’.”
The elections which had been scheduled to fill vacancies on Traffic Court are now cancelled. Municipal Court will immediately begin the process of taking over Traffic Court’s duties and establishing a Traffic Division.
