Senator Wonderling Says Free Market Must Drive Energy Policy

Proposes legislation to stimulate energy efficient technologies and job training for new energy industries

Pennsylvania Senator Rob Wonderling (R-24th) applauded the efforts of the Administration and the General Assembly to address Pennsylvania’s long-term energy policy and urged the Special Session on Energy to consider measures that encourage free market entrepreneurship.

“Pennsylvania has the opportunity to lead the nation in energy development. During the Special Session on Energy, we must examine ways to promote new technologies and encourage conservation that does not impose enormous debt on future generations,” said Senator Wonderling.

This fall, Senator Wonderling will be introducing legislation to encourage the development of alternative energies and the use of energy efficient technologies. Specifically, the legislation calls for job training tax credits for new energy industries and uses funding for energy efficiency measures dealing with county and municipal governments.

“I believe government should establish, through investment and legislation, ways to stimulate new alternative energy research and development in the private sector as well as create incentives that promote promising technologies to commercialization,” said Senator Wonderling.

To help further promote clean air, Senator Wonderling will also introduce legislation mandating that all state-owned diesel vehicles use Pennsylvania produced biodiesel.

“As a public official, I believe it is my Constitutional duty to do all I can to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land on which we live. Requiring Pennsylvania’s fleet of diesel trucks to use cleaner burning biodiesel is good for the environment and it’s good for Pennsylvania’s farmers,” said Senator Wonderling.

The Pennsylvania Special Session on Energy began September 17, 2007.
