House Democrats and Rendell
Choose to Slap the Face of Working Families
HARRISBURG—As budget negotiations continue, Speaker of
the House Dennis O'Brien and House Democrats have shown the
ultimate disrespect by not even appointing representatives
to a conference committee to solve the current impasse,
according to Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati
(R-Jefferson).
"Once again, I am disappointed in the leadership of the
House in deciding that families living paycheck to paycheck
are not worthy enough of completing a final budget,"
Scarnati said. "For there not to be an announcement of
conferees to a conference committee exhibits a lack of
understanding and compassion for furloughed workers and
families."
According to Scarnati, he appointed Majority Leader
Dominic Pileggi, Majority Appropriations Chairman Gib
Armstrong, and Minority Appropriations Chairman Gerald
LaValle to represent the Senate in conference committee last
week.
"I also appeal to Governor Rendell to encourage the
Speaker of the House to appoint a conference committee to
end the budget stalemate," Scarnati added. "The Senate
Republicans are comfortable debating their support of a no
tax increase, no new tax, and no excessive spending budget
in public. Clearly, the apprehension from the other side in
going to conference committee displays a lack of confidence
in their proposals.
"The only place you can find Governor Rendell these days
is in a news conference," Scarnati concluded. "Maybe going
to conference committee and allowing the public to see who
is at the table will entice the Governor to take
negotiations of a final budget seriously."
