Senate Passes Senator Gordner's "Helmets to Hardhats"
Legislation to Benefit Veteran Service Men and Women

(HARRISBURG) - - Legislation that will make it easier
for men and women of the armed forces to be certified
as commercial drivers in civilian life has unanimously
passed the state Senate. Senate Bill 262 was authored
by Senator John R. Gordner (R-27), who worked with the
Departments of Transportation and Labor and Industry
on the legislation. The bill is a component of a
program informally known as "Helmets to Hardhats."
"Many individuals serving in the military have
experience driving vehicles similar to those that
require a commercial driver's license in Pennsylvania
and other states," said Senator Gordner. "My
legislation permits those who have the requisite
military driving experience to apply for a waiver of
commercial licensing requirements with the Department
of Transportation, provided that they have at least
two years of experience operating vehicles similar to
those that require a commercial license in
Pennsylvania."
Additional requirements are that the applicant has no
prior history of suspended driving privileges or
disqualifying motor vehicle offenses, which involve
serious offenses such as driving under the influence
of alcohol or drugs or causing accidents resulting in
the injury or death of others.
"At a time when our service men and women are being
called to duty, we should be doing everything we can
to make their return to the civilian workforce as easy
as possible. It's the least we can do to thank them
for their service to our country," said the Senator.
Senate Bill 262 now moves to the House of
Representatives for consideration.
