New Law
Expands Property Tax Exemptions Available for Disabled Veterans
HARRISBURG -- More
of Pennsylvania's disabled veterans will be eligible for property tax exemptions
under legislation signed into law yesterday, according to Sen. Tommy Tomlinson
(R-Bucks).
Under
existing law, Pennsylvania offers property tax exemptions for veterans
who demonstrate financial need. House Bill 2296 includes guidelines for
determining need to extend eligibility to a greater number of disabled
veterans and ensure that applicants with the greatest financial need
receive the benefit.
Under
the legislation, applicants can earn up to $75,000 and are presumed to
be eligible for property tax exemption. Although applicants may be
required to provide proof of income to claim the exemption, the new law
will not require the detailed financial information required under the
current system.
House
Bill 2296 was amended to include language from Senate Bill 19,
legislation sponsored by Tomlinson to establish guidelines for
determining financial need. Tomlinson sponsored legislation to extend
the exemptions in the past two legislative sessions.
"Our
disabled veterans made our nation proud through their incredible courage
and outstanding service, and I am proud that the General Assembly
unanimously joined me in recognizing the sacrifices they made to
preserve our freedom and way of life," Tomlinson said.
The
bill also extends eligibility to disabled veterans who own their home
with his or her spouse. Under current law, a disabled veteran would
only be eligible if he or she was the sole owner of the property. In
addition, the legislation will extend the time to review exemptions from
two years to five years.
