Corman Bill to Aid National Guardsmen Becomes Law
HARRISBURG -- Legislation
sponsored by Senator Jake Corman (R-34) that will ensure that National Guard
members receive paid leave when they are called up for non-training active duty
was signed by the Governor and became Act 150 of 2006.
Corman
said last year, the Legislature approved legislation that was supposed
to provide an additional 15 days of paid leave to all employees of the
Commonwealth who are National Guard members and are called up for
non-training active military duty.
"I
strongly supported that legislation, particularly at a time when many
Pennsylvania guardsmen were being called up for duty," Corman said.
In the
course of assisting a constituent in determining whether or not he was
due the additional benefit, it was discovered that a loophole existed
because a general catch-all provision of federal law allowing guardsmen
to be called up was not included in the legislation. Corman introduced
Senate Bill 1266, which passed unanimously in both the Senate and House.
"Act
150 will close a loophole in the law to ensure that the 15 days of paid
leave is provided to National Guard members when the federal government
calls them up for non-training active duty for 30 or more days," Corman
said. "We want to make sure all our service personnel receive the
benefit, particularly since they and their families sacrifice so much
for our country."
