Senator Robert C. Jubelirer's Remarks
National Guard Day at the Capitol
October 18, 2005
HARRISBURG -- When
we see the flag and hear the National Anthem, we are filled with emotion and
patriotic spirit. When we see those who don the uniform to protect our nation
and fight for freedom, we are filled with awe and respect and gratitude for
their service.
John McCain wrote an
inspirational book about “Why Courage Matters." Clearly, our citizens know
something about courage. That Pennsylvanians of courage, and devotion to cause,
and sense of duty, have stepped forward to serve, has always mattered. True in
the early days of the state militia. True in our great national tests across
the life of our nation. True in the modern age of the National Guard.
Pennsylvania is proud of the
service of our sons and daughters. They bring superb skills and indomitable
spirit to the difficult missions they are asked to undertake. Our state has
more Guard members deployed than any other, a telling measure of the commitment
found in every corner of the Commonwealth.
There are too many things we
take for granted in this life. But we must not take for granted the sacrifices
that these individuals make, the risks that they confront, or the apprehension
that their families feel while they are in combat areas.
In Iraq and in Afghanistan,
the fight for freedom has taken its tragic toll. Our state mourns those who
will not return; we wish that all could come back unharmed.
We should, each day, take
time to thank those who serve. Through our state laws and policies and
services, we acknowledge their service. We are pledged to pass legislation that
will do even more.
It is fitting that, on this National Guard Day,
we honor those who serve. I hope that every Pennsylvanian will honor our Guard
every day, with their thoughts, their prayers, and their respect.
