Governor Signs Pileggi Bill Naming Highway in Honor
of Late Senator Clarence D. Bell
HARRISBURG -- Last
night, Governor Rendell signed into law Senate Bill 677. Introduced by Senator
Dominic F. Pileggi (R-9, Chester, Delaware) the new law officially designates a
section of Route 322 as “The Senator Clarence D. Bell Memorial Highway.” The
Highway will run from Route 1 to Interstate 95 through Concord, Bethel, and
Upper Chichester Townships in Delaware County. A similar measure was introduced
in the House by Representative Stephen E. Barrar (R-Chester, Delaware).
“Clarence Bell had a
distinguished career in both the military and in public service,” noted
Pileggi. The late Senator Bell served in the United States Army during World
War II and received the United States Army Legion of Merit and the Pennsylvania
Distinguished Service Medals. After the war, he attained the rank of Major
General in the Pennsylvania National Guard.
However, Clarence Bell is
probably most remembered for his prominent legislative career in the
Pennsylvania General Assembly. He was elected to the House of Representatives
in 1955 and remained there until his election to the State Senate in 1961. He
served in the Senate until his death in 2002.
Pileggi noted that “Senator
Bell was dedicated to upgrading this corridor of Route 322, which has been
plagued with congestion for years.” Currently, a highway modernization project
is underway which would widen this portion of Route 322, known as the
“Conchester Highway.” The project was first announced in 1992, while Senator
Bell was still in office.
“Senator Bell served in the
General Assembly for 48 years, longer than any other person in Pennsylvania
history,” said Pileggi, who succeeded Bell in representing the 9th District.
“He served his constituents effectively and caringly, and naming this particular
highway after him is a fitting tribute.”
