Greenleaf "Save the Base" Resolution News Conference Set
HARRISBURG -- Sen.
Stewart J. Greenleaf, R-Montgomery/Bucks, will hold a news conference Thursday,
June 16, 2005, at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base on his
Senate Resolution urging federal officials to spare the Horsham Township base
from closure.
The press conference will begin
at 9 a.m. at the Delaware Valley Historical Aircraft Association Museum, located
at the base on Easton Road. Greenleaf will be joined at the event by members of
the Suburban Horsham Willow Grove Chamber of Commerce, an organization that has
been spearheading the “Save the Base” drive.
The 62-year-old base was among
several Pennsylvania military facilities recommended for closure by the
Department of Defense (DOD) on May 13. A nine-member commission -- the Base
Realignment and Closure Commission, will hear objections to DOD-proposed base
shutdowns across the nation and will submit its own list of bases for closure in
September to the President.
Greenleaf noted that
retention effort for the Willow Grove installation is extremely popular because
of the strategic importance of the base and the positive economic impact of the
military facility in the region.
