Legislation Would Allow Electronic Monitoring for Sex Offenders
HARRISBURG -- Sen.
Rob Wonderling (R-24) will introduce legislation that would allow the state to
monitor potentially dangerous sex offenders more closely.
Sen. Wonderling’s legislation
would allow the state to electronically track any person convicted of a sexually
violent offense during any release from incarceration. In cases where a person
is sentenced for a sexually violent offense and is determined to be a sexually
violent predator, the electronic monitoring would be mandatory during probation
and parole.
“There have been great advances
in Global Positioning System technology over the past few years, and my
legislation would put this technology to good use in better protecting our
communities,” Sen. Wonderling said.
Sen. Wonderling’s bill gives
the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole the authority to order electronic
monitoring in cases where the court fails to order GPS monitoring as part of the
sentence. The bill would also make it a crime to intentionally tamper with,
remove, or vandalize an electronic monitoring device. Offenders could face fines
of up to $1,000 and imprisonment for up to 90 days.
Companion legislation to
Wonderling’s bill has already been introduced in the House of Representatives by
Rep. Beverly Mackereth (R-196).
