Senate Approves Robbins Resolution Honoring Vietnam Veterans
May 1-7 Designated "Vietnam
Veteran Remembrance Week" in PA
HARRISBURG -- The
state Senate approved has a measure sponsored by Senator Bob Robbins (R-50)
designating the week of May 1 through May 7 “Vietnam Veteran Remembrance Week”
in Pennsylvania.
Robbins said Senate Resolution
102 reaffirms the Commonwealth’s appreciation of Pennsylvania’s sons and
daughters who contributed to the security of the United States through honorable
military service in the Vietnam War.
“Thirty years ago this week,
the fight for freedom on behalf of the South Vietnamese people ended. The fight
did not end in victory for democracy, but the battle itself represented a
victory for the belief that America will stand up for those yearning to breathe
free,” said Robbins, who served in the U.S. Army for two tours of duty in
Vietnam.
More than 300,000 service
members were wounded and 75,000 were severely disabled. Of the 58,000 service
members killed, 3,142 were fellow citizens of this Commonwealth, Robbins noted.
“Since their return, these
veterans have contributed tremendously to their communities, states and nation
in an effort to advance the American ideals for which they fought,” said
Robbins. “We must never forget the pain and suffering that lingers today for
the men and women who fought with honor and distinction in the name of freedom
and democracy for all.”
There are approximately
340,000 Vietnam veterans living in communities across Pennsylvania.
