Legislators Unveil Proposal on Closure of State
Hospitals
HARRISBURG -- Senate
Majority Whip Jeff Piccola (R-15), Senator Patricia Vance (R-31), Representative
Jerry Nailor (R-88), and Representative Ronald Buxton (D-103) will hold a press
conference on Wednesday, February 2 at 10 a.m. in the Capitol Rotunda to unveil
legislation that would prevent the closure of state hospital facilities until
after the completion of a report by the Legislative Budget and Finance
Committee.
They will be joined by additional members of the
Legislature, county commissioners, and staff from local mental health and mental
retardation offices.
The Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare has announced its intention to
close Harrisburg State Hospital in 2005. Harrisburg State Hospital was the
first state mental hospital built in the Commonwealth, and one of the first in
the United States, opening in 1851, and currently serves seven central
Pennsylvania counties.
