HARRISBURG -- The Pennsylvania Senate convened today to begin its 2005-06 legislative session.

Two new members of the Republican Caucus were sworn in during a ceremony in the Senate chamber: Senator Patricia Vance (R-Cumberland) and Senator Bob Regola (R-Westmoreland).

Vance, a professional nurse, is the only member of the Senate with a medical background.  Prior to joining the Senate, she served 14 years in the House of Representatives.  She replaces Senator Hal Mowery, who retired last year.

Jack Wagner (D-Allegheny), who was elected Auditor General.

Senator Robert C. Jubelirer, (R-20) who begins his 20th year as President Pro Tempore, was sworn in by his wife, Commonwealth Court Judge Renée Cohn Jubelirer.

Senate Secretary Mark R. Corrigan and Chief Clerk W. Russell Faber were also sworn in by Judge Jubelirer.

The new bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, the Most Reverend Kevin C. Rhoades, offered the opening prayer.  Bridgette Gan, a high school senior from Dauphin County, sang the National Anthem and “God Bless America.”
