Brubaker Legislation Would Freeze COLAs for
Legislators, Government Officials
HARRISBURG – Sen. Mike Brubaker (R-36) introduced legislation today that
would eliminate cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) for members of the General
Assembly and a number of other government officials for the next two years.
Brubaker's bill would set the annual cost-of-living adjustment for the
General Assembly, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, cabinet members, state row
offices, various boards and commissions and the judicial branch at zero for the
next two years.
"The dire budget situation has forced many groups to do more with less, and I
believe that the General Assembly and government officials should lead by
example by not accepting a COLA until the economy has a chance to recover,"
Brubaker said. "The recession has forced many hardworking individuals to forgo
pay raises, and all branches of government should share in this sacrifice."
Brubaker and many other members of the General Assembly have returned their
COLAs to the State Treasury in the form of a personal check in recent years, but
Brubaker's legislation would ensure that none of the state government officials
included in his legislation would receive additional compensation while other
individuals and groups who rely on state funding are asked to endure a wage
freeze.
