Senate Judiciary Committee to Hear from National Expert on
Evidence-based Programs to Reduce Prison Costs
At a public hearing, Steven Aos, Director of the Washington
State Institute of Public Policy, will make a presentation to the Senate
Judiciary Committee on how strategic investments in evidence-based delinquency
prevention and intervention programs for youth have dramatically reduced prison
costs in Washington State, saving taxpayers over $600 million.
Similar success in Pennsylvania could mean millions in savings
at a time when the state faces a $4 billion budget deficit. A 2008 Penn State
University study showed that the state’s previous investment of $60 million
dollars in evidence-based programs to prevent juvenile delinquency resulted in
$317 million in cost savings. In recent years, these investments have been
drastically reduced.
The EPISCenter at Penn State University asked Senator Greenleaf,
chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to provide a forum so that Mr. Aos
would have an opportunity to share his findings and recommendations with
policymakers in Harrisburg.
