Donate Life PA Act Advances

Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved Senator Greenleaf Donate Life PA Act, SB 180, to help increase organ and tissue donation in the Commonwealth through increased education on the critical need for organs and removing current barriers that prevent many potential organs from being procured.  SB 180 will be considered by the full Senate when legislators return to session in May.

“This legislation is a fight to save lives,” said Senator Greenleaf.  “Every day people that we can save are dying because we have an outdated statute that allows viable organs to go unused.”

Pennsylvania is experiencing a health crisis because of a lack of organ donations.  Someone dies every 18 hours in Pennsylvania waiting for an organ transplant.  About 490 people die each year in the Commonwealth waiting for organs.  More than 8,000 people are currently wait for a life-saving organ transplant in PA.

More information about the Donate Life PA Act and organ donation can be found at www.SenatorGreenleaf.com/organ-donation.  The site features stories of several Pennsylvanians who have received anatomical gifts and how organ donation has saved their lives or those of their children.
