Committees to hold Hearing on Fire & EMS Issues

The Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee and the House Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee will hold a joint public hearing in Monroe County on Tuesday, August 23rd, to gather testimony on Fire & EMS issues.

The hearing is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Safety Center, located at 100 Gypsum Road, Suite 201, Stroudsburg.  Officials scheduled to testify at the hearing include Tim Solobay, State Fire Commissioner, as well as representatives from:

  • Lookout Fire Co. #1
  • PA Ambulance Association
  • PA Emergency Health Services Council
  • PA Fire & Emergency Services Institute
  • West End Fire Company
  • Wilkes-Barre Bureau of Fire

“The Committees are getting ready to relaunch a task force to examine how the Commonwealth can assist our first responders over the next several decades,” said Senator Randy Vulakovich, Chairman of the Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness Committee.  “In 2004, the Senate Resolution 60 Task Force issued 23 recommendations, many of which were adopted.  Twelve years later, it is time that we re-engage on this issue and plan for the future.”

“As a longtime first responder I know first-hand the stress declining volunteerism is putting on the emergency services,” said Rep. Frank Farry, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Security & Emergency Response.  “Rebooting SR60 will help advance important tools for the recruitment and retention of emergency responders.”

“I am pleased to host this forum for our first responders in Monroe County,” said Senator Mario Scavello (R-Monroe & Northampton Counties), “It is important that we do all we can to ensure that our volunteer firefighters and EMS responders are equipped with the necessary tools to do their jobs and I am looking forward to our community providing input to the Senate and House Committees.”
